The Marines are invading southern Indiana. But don’t panic — it’s just a training exercise.
Starting Thursday, the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit will conduct military training at Camp Atterbury and surrounding communities. Known in military-speak as a Realistic Urban Training exercise, the RUT is part of the unit’s pre-deployment training program.
During the exercise, Marines will conduct patrols, run vehicle checkpoints, react to ambushes and encounter improvised explosive devices, as well as learn other skills they’ll need while working overseas in an urban environment.
The military’s aim is to make the exercise as real as possible, leading the Marines to ask local citizens not to become alarmed if they see uniformed members of the military, role-playing bad guys and hear or see helicopters.
“The Marines’ activity in the communities will center on what are called situational training exercises — a variety of mock missions aimed at replicating the types of missions they might face during their upcoming deployment,” a notice to area residents read. “The Marines will be living at Camp Atterbury, and most of the activity off-base will be concentrated in a relatively small number of designated areas. Where some raids take place, locals may notice role players dressed in Middle Eastern clothing carrying fake, rubber weapons.”
The training will be at Camp Atterbury, Muscatatuck Urban Training Center and the Hoosier National Forest, affecting Brown County State Park, Columbus, Seymour, Nashville and Tell City. Some activity will also be in Kentucky at Louisville, Frankfort and Peak Mills.
That means people may see uniformed Marines in these areas, as well as the equipment needed to transport them to and from training exercises. That could include MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft and CH-53 Super Stallion, UH-1 Huey and AH-1 Super Cobra helicopters, which will use pre-designated landing zones.
All areas used for training have been approved by local land and business owners and local and state officials, according to the military. The training exercise will be complete Oct. 7.
The Camp Lejeune-based 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit is slated to be the landing force for the Norfolk-based Nassau Expeditionary Strike Group, and will be deployed early next year on three amphibious assault ships.
The Marines began their pre-deployment training in June and, by the time they head overseas, they will have completed specialized combat courses, field training exercises and at-sea drills aboard the ships they will be living on for at least seven months next year.

wow, we have the possible perfect storm of coincidence here... the military are training everywhere, we are starting into an economic collapse, and we supposedly have to worry about the h1n1 flu hitting when, in october???
if you own a scanner... analog or digital... you should search 30.000 mhz to 50.000mhz, 225.000mhz to 400.000mhz, 160.000 mhz to 175.000 mhz 148.000mhz to 150 mhz.
personally i have heard military choppers in the 40.000 mhz area.
if you notice the military operating in your area, you should scan the gmrs bands as well as the 380.000mhz to 400.000 mhz range if you see them on foot.
and remember that swine flu shot is bullshit, dont take it and watch for possible "checkpoints" to require you to take it.
